This skull model is perfect for many purposes. To name a few: scientific study, personal collection, sketch making, exhibition, home decoration, or best of all, as a very distinguished gift!
Though finished before the release of the Metal Manchurian Tiger Skull Model, the Metal Saber-toothed Tiger Skull has seen many times of postponement in releasing. Being too busy is one excuse, but most likely it was the weight that troubled us most. This model came out way heavier than designed, weighing 10 kg, which drives the cost of transportation up in folds – given that we targeted international museums and luxury furniture sellers – and in turn forces an appalling final price.
Are you puzzling over how this model is made, as many others do? Its processing is indeed one of a kind. Such processing is known as “lost wax processing”: we dug up a pit on the ground, buried the wax mould inside, kept it burning with coal for one day, and then cast it with brass that’s been purified three times. It was a two-day process that very possibly would not be allowed outside of China for environmental concerns – which partly explains the high price. Three times purification is as far as we go considering the expense of multiple smelting. A bad example: I have a copper ash try as light as 1 kg; it went through smelting 10 times, but turned out to be a reject. The processor had the good sense of charging me only for the material, not for processing. Now take a wild guess how much that was? 1000 US dollars! I’ll also let you in on something about this processor: this famous master owns a small studio in a village in Heibei Province, and a shop-front in Bai Gong Fang (a prestigious handicraft museum) which is rarely open. He is the only craftsman to find when restoration of Xuande Copperwares is concerned (Xuande is a period in Ming Dynasty, known for the making of royal copperwares). Whatever the master makes instantly turns into diplomatic gift. I spent half a year to find the man, and to be graced the honor of hiring him? There was much shameless begging involved, I can tell you.
